There is currently a harmful immigration bill being passed through both chambers of Congress, known as the Laken Riley Act (H.R.29/S.5). The tragedy of Laken Riley’s murder is being used as a tactic to unjustifiably correlate immigrants with rising crime, which harms all immigrant communities across the U.S.
The bill already passed in the House and Senate, with some Democrat support, and is now going back to the House for a final vote. We need you to take urgent action to stop this bill from landing on President-elect Trump’s desk after he is inaugurated.
Here’s what the bill would do if enacted:
- Empower attorneys general like Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton, who is leading the charge to end DACA. H.R.29 would allow attorneys general to sue in federal district court to overrule individual and policy decisions made by the Executive branch regarding immigration detention.
- Expand the category of individuals who will face mandatory detention without being convicted of a crime.
- Create a pipeline to indefinite detention for petty offenses, which will significantly impact Black and Brown communities that are already at risk for racial profiling.
Here’s what you can do to help:
- Find your representatives here.
- 48 Democrats voted in favor of the bill, find out here if your representative is one of them.
- Call your representatives by using the U.S. Capitol switchboard (202) 224-3121.
- Urge them to vote NO during the final House vote. Here’s what you can say:
My name is _____. I am a constituent calling to urge Representative _____ to take a stand against the Laken Riley Act. It is a harmful bill being used to target and criminalize undocumented immigrants, and I urge Representative ____ to vote against it. Thank you.
